Audience Research

From the research I have collected I have discovered that out of 20 people of all different ages, the most popular genre chosen is Indie Rock. This then works within my groups favour as we now know that our target audience likes this form of music. However with all the other genres, it means we can use some style from that genre within our Indie Rock music video. Even with Indie styled music being more popular for males, from my gender question, consdiering more males wanted to participate within my questionnaire, 9 out of the 10 females who took part favourited the Indie style of music genre.

When looking at the research gathered, it did not come to much of a surprise that more males than females wanted to complete my questionnaire; however it is proven within my results that the few selected women are still interested in Indie music as the men are. From the data collected and now knowing males are more interested within music than females allows my group and I to cater our music video to males more than females.

For my locations question, I wanted to give people taking part a wide range of conventional locations used within Indie Rock music videos to choose from, so they were able to focus on Indie Rock music and identify for themselves some examples of videos to help work out what they feel would look best. When taking this question into consideration many of the people believed that using a London town location would look best. I feel this could work to my groups advantage as London Town has plenty of things going all of the time which we can take and use as inspiration when deciding what to do within a London town location.

It is much more popular to have a Fast past Indie Rock song, in my opinion, because it keeps the target entertained and caters to the rock aspects within the genre as it creates atmosphere and a climax within the music that can be enjoyable to listen to. When discovering that many people also preferred a fast paced Indie Rock song, it has allowed my group and me to decide on a specific song from our two possible artists; Friendly Fires and/or The Noisettes. Both artists have many songs that are faster paced then slow, as a faster pace is more conventional to the genre.

It is much more interesting when the video cuts in time with music of the song as it engages the audience, of whatever genre, by making it more familiar as it is conventional of all music videos to include this form of editing style. I believe to make an effective and professional looking music video it will be more beneficial for my group and myself by editing the shots to the music as it can be just as effective as the music off the beat. Also depending on our song choice it may make more sense to a chosen story line if the shots cut to the music.

If my group was to take inspiration from Friendly Fires band image then over the top costuming would be more fitting, however as we are doing our own personal music video with, possibly, one of their songs then it would make more sense to do as our target audience prefers which is casual costuming. On the other hand, I feel it would make our music video more interesting, different and abstract if either the band shots or narrative had a more contrasting style to the other, allowing our video to stand out from other similar genres.

With the answers given from this question it has enabled me to become more confident with one artist choice over the other, as Friendly Fires are a band. So with both being within the Indie Rock genre it makes more sense to focus on music by Friendly fires as they seem to be more popular with our target audience. Also bands are more conventional within Indie Rock genre as the band is more connected to Rock genre.

Conventionally it is preferred to have a mixture of both Story line (narrative) and also shots of the band performing, in order for the target audience to identify the bands unique image style, as this is how we shall differ from other videos of the same genre. As our chosen audience prefers a mixture of the two it would then go against the point of creating a questionnaire to go against their given views. However as ‘Strong Story Line’ has more of a percentage than ‘Band performing’ but less than ‘Mixture of the two’ that allows us to have more of a story line than shots of the band but still has the mixture that the target audience wants.
